The Sustaining Scandinavian Folk Arts in the Upper Midwest project at UW–Madison is delighted to announce the launch of a digital exhibit, created by UW graduate student Mirva Johnson, entitled “Traveling Traditions: Nordic Folk Arts in the Upper Midwest.” Based on collaboration between CSUMC, the Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic+, and the Mills Music Library at UW–Madison, as well as the Minnesota State Arts Board, and the Wisconsin Arts Board, “Traveling Traditions” features Nordic-American artists from Minnesota and Wisconsin who were interviewed and documented by UW graduate student folklorists between 2017 and 2019. In addition to the virtual exhibit these artists are featured on a set of traveling exhibition panels that will eventually circulate among designated locations in Wisconsin and Minnesota. In the meantime, we welcome you to visit our virtual exhibit to learn more about the variety of ways Nordic traditions are carried on and expressed in the Upper Midwest. Thank you and enjoy!
