Farm Pictures

Today the owner is Tom McClellan. His great-grandfather was born in Canada and eventually worked in Chicago. His grandfather wanted to be a farmer. The farm was on his work route and bought the farm in 1926. The farmhouse was built in1930, the same year that Tom’s father was born.

Tom’s father and uncles worked with horses and milked 25 cows a day. In the early days, everyone in the family ran the farm. However, the sons decided to go on to college. Neighbors thought that attending college was not what farm children did in those days.

Another unique thing that Tom’s grandmother did was provide a summer camp for Chicago’s under-privileged kids in their nearby cottages. The kids had swimming lessons in their swimming pool and had time to spend just on a farm.

Things have really changed since Tom’s grandparents ran the farm. Today, 400 cows produce 48,000 lbs. milk with fewer people because of the newest farm equipment that is available.
