Project M.O.S.T.

(Multicultural Ongoing Student Training
)

Project M.O.S.T. is a project that was implemented in 1993 at the Delavan-Darien Middle and High School.  It stemmed from seven high school Peer Helpers who had attended a prevention workshop.  They were concerned about the lack of understanding and appreciation of diversity in their school and community.  To address their concern, the students approached our SAP coordinator at that time and the Middle School Bilingual Teacher.  A proposal was written and a grant that fall provided monies to train a group of middle school Latino students and a core group of high school students.  The purpose of the training was to provide leadership skills to the Latino students using high school Per Helpers as positive role models.  The high school students also benefited from working closely with the unique group of middle school bilingual students.

The following school year the district allocated funds to continue Project M.O.S.T. efforts.  Since then, the group has taken many avenues from presentations to elementary students to the recent project of developing this Delavan web page.

Project M.O.S.T. has four goals: 1) to provide leadership opportunities; 2) to promote a better understanding of cultural diversity; 3) to train students in communication and peer helping skills; and 4) to  provide student, staff and community awareness.

The criterion for selection include: 1) possess leadership qualities, 2) positive role models and 3) demonstrate tolerance and acceptance of others.
