August 12 – 15, 2013 - tours and trainings in Madison
through June 2014 - full project in local communities

Transform your teaching next year through Bringing It Home, Wisconsin Teachers of Local Culture’s four days of local culture training in Summer 2013. Using innovative tools and immersive tours, WTLC will train four four-member teams composed of K-12 educators and community leaders in project-based learning strategies for investigating local culture. Teams will receive strategic assistance, mentoring and on-site coaching during the year as they create and implement a student-powered local culture project.  See details and application form.

Summary of Bringing It Home
Wisconsin Teachers of Local Culture (WTLC) is recruiting K-12 educators to create a local culture team in their community.  Four teams from across the state will go on cultural tours of Madison neighborhoods and receive intensive training in Madison August 12 – 15, 2013 and then, with ongoing support from WTLC, develop and implement a local culture project in their schools/communities by June 2014.

Bringing It Home Outcomes
By participating in Bringing It Home, educators and community partners will draw on the creative capacity of students.  Bringing It Home projects created by local culture teams will employ project-based strategies that meet curriculum standards in multiple disciplines to investigate an issue vital to a community’s local culture and identity. Students will hone skills that include inquiry, problem solving, idea integration, critical thinking, reflection, action, collaboration in work, and communication in a variety of media as they investigate, identify, analyze and present local culture back to their community.

Exploring Tours Resources Teaching About Us

WTLC is a community of educators of all subject areas and grade levels that provides inspiration, support and delight through its exchange of ideas and resources.

WTLC is the hub through which Wisconsin educators connect with others who are committed to including local cultural studies in their teaching and outreach. WTLC enables PK-16 educators to recognize local culture and then help their students understand what being a social creature is all about, to understand their own cultural depth, and develop a respect for the deep and broad cultures of others as lived locally.
