Memo to Parents Potholders

See the lovely potholders your child made in class. (Not all of them are finished today, so it’s possible that your child is only bringing one home.) Each student first made 6 quick designs that represent aspects of family culture and then chose 2 that fit our criteria: represents culture, recognizable, simple/bold design, and fills most of the space.

Next, working with parents and Ms. Wendt, they cut out the designs and used them as patterns for cutting pieces of fabric. Next these pieces of fabric were glued on to 8” by 8” squares of fabric and passed on to parents. They sewed the pieces on to the backgrounds, sewed on the backs, filled them with stuffing, and quilted them. The parents brought two sewing machines to class, where some of the sewing was done.

Another parent came in to work with students in building a display rack for showing the potholders. We still need to fill in individual cards that describe each design and how it represents family culture.

We will sell the potholders this Friday at the Franklin-Randall Dance for $8 each. The money will be used to support fieldtrips to study Dane County culture.

A few students and parents have asked if they can buy their own potholders. If you decide to buy the potholder your child made, send $6 for each potholder to class by Friday morning--or take your chance at the dance.

Please return ALL potholders--including the one(s) you will purchase--to school tomorrow morning. We will show ALL potholders at the LMC and at the dance--they make a lovely display.

Also, a big thank you to the parents who helped with this project. They would very much appreciate a parent or two to help sell the potholders Friday night at the school dance.

Please return ALL potholders tomorrow morning
