Tradition meets the Creative Mind


The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, is hosting a symposium, The Art of Rosemaling: Tradition Meets the Creative Mind, April 23–April 25, 2004.

Rosemalers and folk art enthusiasts will gather to discuss the art, explore its possibilities, and inspire painters. Norwegian Masters Sigmund Aarseth and Nils Ellingsgard will be on hand, as well as American teachers Eldrid Arntzen, Jo Sonja Jansen, and Karen Jenson for a three-day dialogue on the interplay of tradition and creativity in rosemaling.

The symposium will take place in downtown Decorah, Iowa. General sessions will be held in the newly renovated Steyer Opera House at the historic Hotel Winneshiek. Classes, exhibits, receptions, and smaller sessions will be at Vesterheim Museum.

Early registration (by Dec. 31, 2003) is $125 for Vesterheim members and $155 for non-members, which includes a one-year individual Vesterheim membership. Registration after Dec. 31, 2003 is $160 for members and $190 for non-members.
