1. Umlauts are not supported in this database. Please use the following: ae for ä, oe for ö, and ue for ü. Please use ss in place of ß.

3. For a subject approach to the database the file Keywords Used in the MKI Collections provides an overview of subject headings and is meant to help formulate searches by keyword. The list is organized by broad subject area under such headings as religion, history, folklore, etc.
4. Entries for German-language publications that were printed in the United States from the 18th century to the early 20th century all have the keyword PIA (Published in America).
