MATCHING EXERCISE

Directions: The 1860 U.S. Census contains a section called The Agricultural Census. Farmers were asked about the animals they kept and the crops they raised on their farms. This information allows us to get a picture of how productive a particular farm was in the year between 1859-1860. Some of the crops and animals recorded are listed below in the matching exercise. You may need to use an English-German dictionary to match some of the items. When you have completed the matching portion, you will have a listening exercise from which you will gather statistics about the Lutze farm. This information you will enter to the right of the German word.

Listening Exercise: This listening exercise should be administered after students have completed and corrected the animals/crops matching exercise.

Helpful vocabulary:

das Feld -er - field
Büschel - bushel (americanism)
ernten - to harvest
wachsen - to grow

Herr Gottlob Lutze hatte im Jahr 1860 einen Bauernhof in Centerville Township, Manitowoc County Wisconsin. Er hatte ein Grundstück von 80 Ackern, was für diese Zeit ziemlich viel Land war.

Auf dem Bauernhof gab es ein Feld mit Weizen, Felder mit Roggen und Gersten, und auch ein Feld mit Hafern. Vom Haferfeld hat Herr Lutze 100 Büschel Hafer geerntet. Vom Weizenfeld hat er 50 Büschel Weizen bekommen. Er hat auch 100 Büschel Roggen und 10 Büschel Gerste geerntet. Mais wurde aber nicht zu dieser Zeit auf dem Bauernhof gewachsen.

Herr Lutze hatte auch Tiere. Es gab vier Ochsen, aber keine Pferde. Er hatte vier Schweine, aber keine Schafe oder Maulesel. Es gab aber drei Milchkühe auf dem Bauernhof. Für seine Tiere hat Herr Lutze vier Tonnen Heu geerntet.

Frau Lutze mußte auch viel mithelfen. Aus dem Garten hat sie 70 Büschel Kartoffeln und 10 Büschel Erbsen und Bohnen geerntet. Sie hat auch 250 Pfund Butter gebuttert.

Herr und Frau Lutze hatten insgesamt acht Kinder. Alle mußten auf dem Bauernhof helfen.

For the Teacher: A follow-up discussion in English might center around a discussion of why Herr Lutze grew no wheat and why he had no horses.

Wheat was the first major food crop grown in Wisconsin. When the soil would no longer support wheat, wheat-growing moved west and Wisconsin farmers began to raise corn.

Eastern Wisconsin was one large primeval forest when the first settlers arrived. The terrain was very difficult to traverse and thousand of trees, stumps, and roots had to be removed before one could begin planting a crop. Oxen were the work animals of choice because they were much stronger and rugged animals than horses.
