American and German Teachers
working together to explore
Immigration Past and Present
June 15-19, 2004

A new approach to addressing diversity issues in the classroom and teaching students to become global citizens.

• American and German teachers and university students will be working together to jointly explore the phenomenon of immigration over the centuries. Focus will be on the United States (a traditional country of immigration) and on Germany, which for centuries used to be a country of emigration but in recent decades has itself been the destination of large numbers of immigrants.
• We will address topics such as acculturation, assimilation, ethnic and cultural diversity and identity in their historical, global, and local contexts. Specific issues will be citizenship, bilingualism, religion, multiculturalism, and diversity in education as well as the concepts of a national language and language use.
• In cooperation with our German colleagues, we will develop lesson plans and curricula to fit our specific subject areas, local and school communities, and general teaching needs.
• We will work with a wealth of current and historic authentic materials, including Internet resources.
• American teachers will meet on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus and will interact with their German colleagues via electronic media every morning.
• We will have ample opportunity to sample some of Madison’s many cultural offerings.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: Teachers in all subject areas and grade levels, university students
LANGUAGE: English, with ample opportunity for German immersion
CREDITS: 1-3 University of Wisconsin-Madison credits available. Please contact us for details.
WI-DPI CEUs: Available (approval pending)
REGISTRATION: required.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: May 1, 2004. Registration has been closed.
LODGING: To be arranged by participants. Rooms have been pre-reserved until May 14
for 6 nights (June 14-19) at The Lowell Center, 1950 Willow Drive, Madison WI 53706, (608) 231-1341.

Fee: The workshop is free. Please inquire about UW-tuition costs, if you choose the UW-credit option.
