Max Kade Institute / Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures

Policy on Visiting Scholars

The Max Kade Institute for German-American Studies (MKI) and the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures (CSUMC), as part of their dual missions to promote research and outreach within and beyond the University of Wisconsin–Madison, welcome visiting scholars funded by outside sources. This policy seeks to clarify the kinds of services the MKI and CSUMC are able to provide visiting scholars.

The MKI and CSUMC are located in the Keystone House on the UW–Madison campus. Visiting scholars will be offered access to the range of research materials housed at the Institute and Center, including books, periodicals, and other written media, as well as sound recordings, for on-site use and during regular weekday hours, unless alternative arrangements are made with the directors. Further, the MKI and CSUMC will assist visiting scholars in obtaining a temporary UW identification card that will allow them access to other libraries on the UW–Madison campus. This ID card will also enable scholars to use any one of a number of computer labs on campus for research, Internet access, email, etc., and also serve as a bus pass for campus transportation. For international visitors, the MKI and CSUMC will issue a formal letter of invitation for the purpose of visa support.

Due to the very limited workspace for the staffs of the MKI and CSUMC, we are unable to provide visiting scholars with office/desk space or computer/printer/scanner access in the Keystone House. Limited use of the photocopier for research purposes only will be permitted. And although MKI/CSUMC staff may refer visiting scholars to relevant sources of information on campus (e.g., International Student and Scholar Services), we cannot make housing, travel, or transportation arrangements (including parking) for visitors.

Finally, although it is not a formal requirement, the MKI and CSUMC encourage visiting scholars to deliver a public lecture or other presentation on their research during their stay in Madison. The Institute and Center will be happy to make the necessary arrangements and may be able to offer speakers a modest honorarium.

Any questions regarding the MKI/CSUMC policy on visiting scholars should be forwarded to MKI director Mark L. Louden (mllouden@wisc.edu) or CSUMC associate director Ruth Olson (reolson3@facstaff.wisc.edu).
