The first large group of new immigrants to come to the region were the Cornish. They were recruited to work in the mines of the Copper Country in Michiganís Upper Peninsula.
When those mines opened in the 1850s and Ď60s, experienced Finnish copper miners working in
Norway were also recruited and imported by the mining companies.
