History Bootlegging
Bootlegging was a common activity throughout Madison during Prohibition (1917-1933). During that time, many Italians in the Greenbush made and sold “moonshine” for income. Thus, the “Bush” had a special reputation for bootlegging and housed several speakeasies that catered to University students.
